Student Recycle Container Murals- Heroes of Olathe

The murals were created by students in the Distinguished Scholars in Art Program at Olathe North High School. The theme, “Heroes of Olathe” doing their jobs, was selected by the students.

Rooted in Hope, Growing in Dreams
Local mural artist Ken Dela created the mural’s outline and visitors at the 2023 Olathe Arts Festival were invited to pick up a paintbrush and add their own personal touches to this community mural! The mural was supported in part by the Kansas Arts Commission and the National Endowment for the Arts. Olathe Mural
Olathe residents were asked, what truly defines Olathe? Whether it was a cherished landmark, notable area in town, a historical moment or figure, or simply the essence of what makes Olathe a remarkable place; local artist Ken Dela brought these ideas to life in the “Olathe” mural that now graces the walls of the Olathe Community Center. This mural was supported in part by the Kansas Arts Commission and the National Endowment for the Arts. Artist: Ken Dela Location Olathe Community Center, 1205 E Kansas City Rd Medium: Paint

Untitled Tree Carving
Instead of cutting down an infected elm tree at Olathe Memorial Cemetery, staff decided to keep a portion and turn it into an amazing piece of art. With a theme of Kansas and new life, Tom with Oklahoma Chainsaw Carvings created a beautiful wooden sculpture, one that depicts a sunflower surrounded by caterpillars transforming into butterflies. Artist: Tom Zimmer, Oklahoma Chainsaw Carvings Location: Olathe Memorial Cemetery, 738 N Chestnut St Medium: Elm Tree

Untitled Mosaic
The idea behind a mosaic and a sunset are two-fold. You’ve lost someone very special to you, and you’re trying to pick up those pieces and put your life back together, while reflecting on all the beauty they brought into your life.
